Some big strides forward on flooring, from the latest recycled carpet tiles to low-energy underfloor heating and a fast-drying solution for Southend鈥檚 refurbished Cliffs Pavilion
Floor refurbishment
Floor preparation products from F Ball and Co were chosen to refurbish the 700m2 main auditorium floor at Cliffs Pavilion in Southend-on-Sea. Stopgap P131, Stopgap 500 Micro and Stopgap 700 Superflex were used to prepare the area for the new floor coverings, and then a 25mm plywood subfloor was installed and primed using Stopgap P131. The products were chosen due to their fast-drying qualities as the project was of a time-sensitive nature.

Floor paints
Watco has launched the Fastcoat series, with new floor paints, anti-slip paint and a primer. Instead of using traditional epoxy resin based solutions, Fastcoat relies on Polyaspartic resin, which the company says enables faster drying times, easier application and a longer lifespan. The floor is ready for light traffic within six to eight hours and back to normal in 12.

Levelling compound
Birmingham Children鈥檚 hospital chose ARDITEX NA, a self-smoothing, protein-free, latex-levelling compound, to refurbish its cafe floor and reception area. The hospital required a fast-setting product to enable it to finish the project as quickly as possible. Adhesive residue from the previous floor was still present but ARDITEX NA was applied over this as it does not require priming or mechanical preparation.

Underfloor heating
Underfloor heating from Gaia has been installed at a residential development of 45 apartments in London Square Eastcote, Middlesex. Gaia鈥檚 鈥渨et鈥 underfloor heating system was chosen because the developer was looking for a low-carbon renewable solution with low energy consumption. Hydronic fixing strips and pipework were laid over solid concrete floors, which were of precast beam-and-block construction. After this, the pipework was encased in the floor screed.
