Electronic roof windows

Electronic roof windows

Fakro has supplied 53 Electro roof windows and blinds for two new timber buildings at Ockendon Academy in Essex (see picture, right).

A total of 16 windows were installed in the seven-classroom English block while a further 37 were used on a larger self-contained sixth form facility.

Fakro Electro roof windows were chosen as they met the requirement for wall-mounted electrical operation. The windows also maximised the availability of natural light throughout the new buildings.

Sliding door drive

Tormax has added to its portfolio of automatic door operators with the launch of the iMotion 2302 sliding door drive. The iMotion 2302 has an installation height of 150mm that the company says helps it to blend into a building facade. Tormax claims products in the iMotion range have low-energy operation, providing sustainable solutions. Products are manufactured using mostly recyclable materials and all operators have been tested to DIN EN 18650 / EN16005 (1 million cycles with 4000 cycles/day) and meet all current CE and RoHS requirements.

Door suite

Door suite

Architectural aluminium systems provider Technal has launched the SOLEAL universal door range. The new door suite has been developed for areas of heavy use such as hospitals, shopping and sports centres, offices, apartment buildings and education environments. The patented design uses a 55mm deep module for single action hinged, and double and single action pivot doors. SOLEAL has a crimped double polyamide thermal break which, Technal claim, allows the product to achieve high levels of energy efficiency and deliver U values as low as 1.4W/m2K.

Automatic swing door operators

Automatic swing door operators

Dorma ED250A automatic swing doors have been specified as part of an upgrade of facilities at the Grand Arcade shopping centre in Cambridge (pictured). Dorma claims that ED250A swing door operators were chosen to improve internal comfort levels for customers and reduce energy costs for retailers. The ED250A has integrated wind-load capabilities which the company claims automatically recognises and compensates for wind loads up to 150 N. Suitable for doors with a weight of up to 250kg and a width of 1600mm, Dorma also provides an integrated door coordinator for double leaf doors.

Bespoke curtain walling and window solutions from Wicona have been used to create an aluminium and glass façade at the University Hospital in Ulm, South Germany (see picture, right). The transparent areas of the facade were created using Wicona’s WICTEC curtain walling suite, and WICLINE casement windows were inserted into the glazing. The window openings have multi-coloured glass which the company claims was chosen to add interest to the front and rear elevations of the hospital as well as to introduce colour and light into internal areas.

Top swing fully reversible windows

Metal Technology has supplied £500,000 (installed value) of their System 1-35 Hi+ Top Swing Fully Reversible windows for the refurbishment of three apartment blocks in Aberdeen. The work was undertaken by Lovell, with installation of the windows carried out by CMS Enviro Window Systems. Approximately 1200 triple-glazed opening vents were installed on the three apartment blocks. Metal Technology claims the thermally enhanced System 1-35Hi+ windows were chosen upgrade the flats’ energy efficiency and external appearance. On the Balnagask scheme, the system 1-35Hi+ in conjunction with the correct glass specification achieved a window U value of 1.3W/m2K. Glazing thicknesses of up to 47mm can be accommodated within the system.

Movers and Makers

  • Profile 22 has launched a new specification and technical guide. The 48-page reference book and accompanying CD can be used by architects and specifiers when specifying Profile 22 PVC-U systems. The guide contains information about the new products, technical updates, accreditations and services. The guide is available to download from the company’s website
  • Timber windows and doors by fenestration product manufacturer Mumford & Wood have been tested to meet the recommended requirements of the new Part L ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Regulations which come into effect this month.  Mumford & Wood’s standard specification, Window Energy Rated (WER) A and B Conservationâ„¢ spring balance sash, box sash (operated by traditional weights and pulleys), and coordinating casement windows already meet the new suggested requirement and all achieve the minimum U-value.
  • Reynaers Aluminium has opened a new exhibition and meeting area in Uxbridge, Middlesex. Featured in the space is the Reynaers Hi-Finity structurally glazed sliding door system which is designed to allow the installation of large glass units with minimal visual sight lines. Also on show is the CF 77 SL (slim line) door; a bi-fold door with slimmer sight lines, that enables the whole aperture to be opened up. Reynaers London Design Office is based at: 6-9 The Square, Stockley Park, Uxbridge, Middlesex UB11 1FW.
  • Sapa ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Systems’ Crown 98mm aluminium sliding door has been awarded an A+ Door Set Energy Rating (DSER) by the British Fenestration Ratings Council (BFRC). The company says the top rating was achieved through the door’s slim sight lines, which increase the glazed area allowing maximum light into the building, and thermal break technology which reduces heat transferred from inside to outside. As well as the top DSER, the door also achieves a low U-value of 1.4W/m²k with double glazed units.
  • Windows and doors manufacturer Lomax + Wood has achieved a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K for their Kensington & Chelsea timber sliding sash window. This applies to both traditional weights and pulleys, and spring balance forms of operation. The Kensington & Chelsea flush and stormproof casements achieve a U-value of 1.2 W/m²K, while the French doors achieve 1.4 W/m²K.  All measurements have been tested using the new British Board of Agrément (BBA) software tool in compliance with BS EN ISO 10077-1:2006.
