Hansel and Gretel style house inspired by Willy Wonka wins school kids' design competition.
The rather delicious winner of the Junior Open House scheme, which aims at empowering young people with knowledge of architectural design excellence, has wowed the judges with a house made out of sweets.
St Marylebone CE School for Girls pupils鈥� designs 鈥渟howed imagination and inspiration鈥�, said the judges, including Richard Rogers and Eva Jiricna. 鈥淭hey were communicating clearly through a model and a range of drawings.鈥�
Alongside the Hansel and Gretel style house designed for Willy Wonka, other schools' entries included designs for celebrities as eclectic as Joey from the television series Friends, Kelly Osbourne and Norman Foster.
The Junior Open House programme, which has been running for a year and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has given 200 11-14 year olds from 23 London boroughs the opportunity to visit landmarks of the capital鈥檚 architecture, take part in design workshops and work alongside leading architects.
Prizes have also been awarded to the best model, best teacher and for design inspiration. The best architect award went to Nicholas Pawlick from Dixon Jones Architects, who 鈥渋nspired pupils and teachers from Bow Boys School, helping them to explore Somerset House and design architectural clocks for the site鈥�.
