A strong performance by Wilson Bowden, which won £71.3m worth of contracts in the East Midlands, saw the region’s workload jump to £125.8 from £29.2m in the previous quarter.
Tarmac took pole position in the North-west with £65m of work, resulting in regional workload rising to £139.8m, up from £63.3m in the last quarter of 1998.
Bowmer & Kirkland topped the South-east league, and, at £218.9m, workload in the region was well up on the previous quarter’s £112.7m.
HBG Construction’s £81.5m worth of work in Scotland topped the national league of work won, but the overall figure for workload in Scotland, £149.4m, was down on the previous quarter’s £184.3m.
The downturn was repeated in the North-east, Yorkshire, Wales, the South-west and London.
