Marley Eternit’s Melbourn interlocking slates have been used on the construction of a school for Ceredigion council in West Wales
Roofing contractor, Camilleri Roofing, needed a slate that blended with the brick, glass and render finish of the building. Melbourn interlocking slates in a grey finish were specified. The 17.5º pitch of the roof meant natural slates couldn’t be used however, Melbourn interlocking slates can be used on pitches down to 15º while giving a slate like appearance. They also had an A rating under the BRE’s green guide to specification.
Rather than a traditional mortar bedding, a dry fixed solution has been used to secure the tiles. This helped overcome the exposed nature of the site and counter the prevailing weather conditions. It also sped up the installation time.
Dry fix is designed to satisfy the requirements of BS 5534 Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling with respect to the mechanical fixing of roof fittings to resist wind uplift and the provision of a weathertight roof.
