Manchester’s Chill Factor, the UK’s longest indoor ski slope, has more than 5,000m2 of Kalzip aluminium cladding, as well as perforated facades and profiled sheets.
Installed by contractor Lakesmere, the facade is wrapped around the emergency staircase below the main slope and appears as a semi-translucent veil. In the evening, lighting is introduced behind the facade, which adds a new dimension to the distinctive building envelope.
The 570m2 of Kalzip facade encasing the staircase includes sheets that have been crimp-curved to a tight radius to soften the corners of the structure. The perforated facades allow fresh air and natural light in to create a comfortable interior, while protecting the exterior from the elements and helping to reduce wind loads. The manufacturer says they are lightweight, low-maintenance and practical.
An extra 4,500m2 of Kalbau stucco-embossed profiled sheets clad the building’s upper elevations.
