Here are six contenders, vote for the one that deserves the accolade - or nominate a project of your choice

To celebrate 好色先生TV鈥檚 170th year we thought we鈥檇 look back over the period at some of the UK鈥檚 finest construction achievements and ask you the readers to vote for the one that ultimately deserves the title of 鈥済reatest鈥�. Just click on one of the six options in the poll on the left.

Of course, it was very difficult to shortlist just six construction projects for such a title. Along the way our editorial team considered other worthy achievements that they felt were groundbreaking or changed construction in some way (see the box below for the names that didn鈥檛 make it on to the list).

1. London Underground (1863)

London Underground was the world鈥檚 first underground railway which transformed urban mass transit.

 

2. Weavers Mill, Swansea (1898)

Weavers Flour Mill was the first reinforced concrete building in the UK which made it easy and cheap to construct large buildings.

 

3. Olympic venues (2012)

The venues for the 鈥楪reatest Show on Earth鈥�, aka the London 2012 Olympics, were delivered on time and to budget

 

4. Preston bypass (1958)

Preston bypass was the UK鈥檚 first motorway which significantly speeded up road transport.

 

5. Ritz hotel (1906)

The Ritz is the first steel framed building in the UK which made it easy and cheap to construct large buildings.

 

6. The Channel Tunnel (1984)

The Channel Tunnell was significant as it was the first major project to funded privately, a fact much trumpeted by Margaret Thatcher at the time.

  • Crystal Palace, Great Exhibition of 1851 - tremendous technical achievement using modern materials of cast iron and glass, extremely successful event that paid for purchase of the South Kensington museum site. Helped raise Britain鈥檚 profile internationally.
  • Ronan Point gave us structural safety regulations dealing with disproportionate collapse.
  • Letchworth was the first Garden City, heralded the birth of the suburb.
  • Boundary Estate, in Tower Hamlets: the first council estate.
  • The Gherkin, first tall building in London since the seventies, very popular for a tall building and made all the subsequent tall towers much easier to get through planning.
  • BedZed, first zero-carbon housing development
  • Wessex Water HQ, (Bennett鈥檚 Associates) kicked off the new generation of green, naturally ventilated office buildings
