Every year we have the delightful task of sifting through hundreds of marvellous submissions all vying for one of the categories in the BDA Brick Awards.

This year has proved no exception, with more buildings entered than ever, attaining higher standards of design, performance, innovation and craftsmanship. It really has been an eye-opener.

The judging got pretty heated at times as modernists slugged it out with traditionalists. But I am sure you will agree that irrespective of one’s particular preference, each of our worthy winners in this supplement represents some of the finest brickwork built in recent years.

Whether in traditional applications or in sleek contemporary buildings, there’s something about brick that makes it an amazingly versatile material. That is why it has been used for thousands of years and is now creating the architecture of the 21st century. To see these remarkable capabilities, just flick through the pages that follow … and enjoy the show.
