I very much enjoyed reading your article on the 1908 Olympics (5 September, page 42), but noticed a couple of historical errors.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin established the International Olympic Committee in 1894. However, that does not mean that he was the sole establisher or founder of the modern Olympic Games. There were founding predecessors, including William Penny Brookes who organised a national Olympic Games at Crystal Palace in 1866 and Evangelis Zappas, a wealthy Greek philanthropist who refurbished the ancient Greek Panathenian stadium for the modern international Olympics that were held there in 1870 and 1875.

The Panathenian stadium has hosted events at the Olympic Games in 1870, 1875, 1896, 1906 and 2004. All you builders take note鈥 it was Zappas who first thought of reducing the carbon footprint of stadiums. No other stadium in the world has its longevity.

Also, do not belittle the 1866 Olympics organised by Brookes. The winner in the hurdles event was WG Grace who was, and still is, the most famous cricketer in history and one of the most famous sportsmen of the 19th century. I would also like to recommend another book about the 1908 Olympic Games published earlier this year by the Society of Olympic Collectors. It is called The 1908 Olympic Games, the Great Stadium and the Marathon 鈥 A Pictorial Record.
