I worry that many people who put their hearts into their degrees will find it hard to get jobs in a few years.

I have had to overcome many obstacles to get to study building surveying. I was accepted on the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust work placement course, which is funded by them. But back in May, once my group of more than 30 young people had already been through five interview stages, we were told that funding had failed and we no longer had places.

It just left many of us stranded. We could wait until next year to see if we could get funding, but we would have to go back through the interviews again or try to get a placement ourselves – anyone that has tried knows how hard that is!

I just feel that money is not spent in the right places. With surveying being such a hands-on task, would it not be better for companies to train recruits on the job rather than sitting them in front of books for three years?
