Germany’s claim of 20.1% of electricity from renewables has to be looked at very carefully (, 8 February).
Germany imports some renewable from Austrian hydroelectric sources but it also now imports electricity from old Soviet designed nuclear power stations in eastern Europe. The German state subsidises electricity consumption for its own industry.
I would question if renewable energy is really the answer to any of our problems - unless we are prepared to consume less electricity than we do now.
