What is it with the media that it has to mention that there was wood in a building that caught fire and/or that it was “timber framed” (“Fire in Bath”, 26 September, page 9)?

What sort of timber frame? Trussed rafters? Or is just “timber frame” more of an attention-grabber?

Petrol burns too, and a damn sight more readily than wood, but do we ever read, “Seven-car pile-up on the M3 earlier today – vehicles believed to contain petrol”?

There are precious few buildings anywhere that contain no wood whatsoever, be it in the fabric or the contents. With petrol in motor cars or wood in buildings, fire is never caused by the innate combustibility of the substance.
