BRE is confident that its proposed development in Garston, Watford will enhance the local community

I am writing in response to your one-sided article regarding BRE’s planning application for a sustainable housing development on the northern part of its site in Garston, Watford (, 5 April, 2013).

We are developing the site so that we can invest in our current buildings and facilities and ensure we continue to be a world class organisation providing local employment. Throughout the planning application process we have conducted extensive stakeholder engagement with the local community, schools and businesses.

The article implied that the site in question is occupied by ancient woodland. There is no ancient woodland on the site. It is currently occupied by existing buildings and is largely open with significant areas of hardstanding and car parking. A tree survey has been conducted by a consultant arboriculturalist and the vast majority of trees will be retained. There will be more trees on site after development than there are at the present. BRE takes sustainable construction extremely seriously.

In the outline plan BRE has decided to set a minimum Level 4 (out of 6) target under the Code for Sustainable Homes. BRE will also discuss ideas with any developer to go even further. A detailed Transport Assessment has concluded that there would be no adverse traffic impact or accessibility problems as a result of the development.

Planning is always an emotive issue but we are confident that, should our application be successful, we will create a development that will enhance the local community.
