Government will focus on delivery of 40 priority projects but will make no new money available
Nick Clegg is to reveal plans to accelerate infrastructure spending later today, but won’t announce any new money for infrastructure.
In an announcement at the London School of Economics later today, Clegg will say that Danny Alexander is now in charge of advanced capital spending.
Forty of the biggest infrastructure projects will be given ‘priority spending status’ by Alexander. These are projects the government has already committed to in its Comprehensive Spending Review.
Clegg will say that intertia and caution in Whitehall has delayed big infrastructure projects. He will cite Wembley, the Jubilee Line extension and the West Coast Mainline as examples of government projects that cost the taxpayer billions because of late delivery.
