The building surveyor’s work is fun and varied, and includes treasure hunts around Covent Garden
I have been a building surveyor for property consultant Robinson Low Francis in London for nearly two years. The form and function of buildings has interested me from a young age. After completing a ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV Surveying BSc (Hons) degree at Sheffield Hallam University, followed by an industrial placement at RLF in building surveying, it was clear that this would be my ideal job.
My average working day changes over the course of the week and includes working on schedule of conditions, measured surveys, maintenance plans, design work using AutoCAD and quality monitoring
The firm has an exceptional graduate and intern programme. During my placement year I was posted to different divisions including quantity surveying, building surveying and project management, which enabled me to get a good understanding of the overall business offering. I am also continually assessed through APC training to ensure I’m making progress. This also guarantees that I am given the best possible support.

Most recently, we have been carrying out site meetings with the client and contractor of a new public bar in Marylebone, conducting quality monitoring and applying design changes if required. This entails liaising with different people to agree on appropriate changes or an adaption of the specification during the construction phase to ensure continuity. Consequently, drawings are revised to incorporate these changes.
During my time here, the team have continually organised leisure competitions including football matches, golf and, to celebrate 125 years of RLF, a treasure hunt around Covent Garden which proved to be a great success for everybody within the office as everybody bonded as a team.
After the busy work schedule, I attempt to partake in some boxing training to keep fit and to release some pressure… although it usually ends in tears!
I am privileged to have an employer who has been dedicated to observing my progress throughout university and within the working environment. The firm is also committed to offering social and leisure events, which bring the organisation together.
