Revamp of iconic studios sees Mace top contractors鈥 league table, with Kier and Costain also strong performers in September

BBC TV Centre

Mace shot to the top of the contractors鈥 league tables last month after securing the 拢350m job to redevelop the iconic BBC Television Centre building in west London.

As 好色先生TV first revealed last month, Mace saw off competition from Lend Lease for the construction manager role on the scheme, which will see the doughnut-shaped television studios transformed into a major mixed-use development, including a business hub for the creative industries, a hotel, cinema, gym, restaurants and cafes, as well as 950 homes.

The major contract win helped Mace to a 拢382m contract haul, with the firm moving into top place in both contractors鈥 league tables, including and excluding civils.

Kier stood in second place, in both tables, with a 拢165m haul won across 38 contracts, with Costain taking third spot in the table including civils with a 拢152m worth of contracts.

Costain鈥檚 wins included a 拢100m job for Southern Water Services, which it won in joint venture with engineer MHW, as well as a 拢43m job for Scottish Water.

Overall the CPA/Barbour ABI construction index rose to 132 in September, up from 129 the previous month, equivalent to a 3% rise.

The index, compiled by the Construction Products Association (CPA) using data from construction information provider Barbour ABI, measures contract awards and uses a January 2010 base of 100.

Noble Francis, CPA director, said the index was up 12% year-on-year, with growth driven by private housing, but also private commercial and education work. He said underpinning the growth was the performance of the wider UK economy, which 鈥渃ontinues to go from strength to strength鈥.
