Contractor overtakes 17 rivals, boosted by major housing and healthcare projects
Galliford Try leapfrogged 17 rival firms to the top of the contractors league table last month, with a £162m contract haul.
The firm moved from 18th place in August into top spot in September, with the company boosted by landing four major schemes.
Galliford Try won two contracts worth £35.4m and £24.9m respectively for Peabody - the first a 264-home scheme in the London borough of Tower Hamlets and the second a 168-home project on the site of London’s redundant Plaistow hospital in Newham.
The contractor also secured a £34m contract to build Birmingham Dental hospital for Birmingham and Solihull LIFT, and a £35m job for Bridgend Custodial Services in Wales.
ISG was also a big mover, up from ninth place to second spot on both contractors league tables, including and excluding civils, with a £156m contract haul.
ISG’s major wins included a £30.6m M&E plant for fashion group Arcadia.
Bowmer & Kirkland also enjoyed a successful month with a £123m haul, which saw it jump 12 places from 15th to third.
Overall the CPA/Barbour ABI construction index rose to 118, up from 106 in August and 109 in July.
The index, compiled by the Construction Products Association (CPA) using data from construction information provider Barbour ABI, measures contract awards and uses a January 2010 base of 100.
Noble Francis, economics director at the CPA, said that growth in activity in the offices, factories and warehouses sectors, combined with continued strength in the housing market, boosted output.
