Stanton Williams and Witherford Watson Mann in running for public spaces redesign

Architects Stanton Williams and Witherford Watson Mann are to battle it out to redesign part of the Royal Opera House.

The firms have already seen off competition from five other architects including Amanda Levete Architects; Heatherwick Studio and Caruso St John Architects.

The practises have been in competition to redesign the entrances and street level areas of the Royal Opera House. The project will also see the winner develop plans for the Linbury Studio Theatre and Paul Hamlyn Hall to make the educational work at the Opera House more visible.

Tony Hall, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, said he was 鈥渆xtremely pleased鈥 with the 鈥渞ichness and variety of the submissions . 鈥淎ll the architects taking part in the competition proposed inspirational ideas for how our public spaces could evolve,鈥 he said.

Diller Scofidio and Renfro and Jamie Fobert Architects also submitted entries to the competition.

The winner will be announced in February 2013.
