Balfour Beatty has topped a list of contractors who won the most BREEAM excellent or outstanding work by value in the last year.

According to data from construction analyst Barbour ABI, Balfour Beatty won work on 拢562m worth of projects that were aiming to achieve the BRE standard鈥檚 highest two ratings in the 12 months to the end of April 2014.

The firm鈥檚 biggest green win was the main contracting role on London鈥檚 拢154m Olympic stadium redevelopment project.

However, it was rival contractor Kier that won the most green jobs with a spot on 25 projects aiming for BREEAM excellent or outstanding, compared with Balfour Beatty鈥檚 12 projects.

Kier鈥檚 wins included a brace of school projects as well as university student accommodation projects.

A Balfour Beatty spokesperson said the firm always encouraged clients to use sustainability standards like BREEAM because 鈥渢hrough this process we can achieve better sustainable outcomes鈥

She added: 鈥淲e work for and partner with intelligent customers who also aspire to achieving the highest standards of sustainability on their projects.鈥

Peter Johnson, group environmental manager at Kier, said it had 鈥渞ecognised the market impact of sustainable design and came to the BREEAM process quite early鈥.

He added that the firm鈥檚 12 environmental managers and its 鈥渟trong supply chain network of specialists鈥 were key to Kier鈥檚 success in the green sector.

He said: 鈥淒uring the tender stage, we carry out an independent review of the BREEAM pre-assessment and suggest to our clients ways in which we could not only deliver a higher BREEAM rating, but also provide added benefits to the building in use.鈥

Morgan Sindall also performed well as it was the only contractor to win more than one BREEAM outstanding job.

Over the period Morgan Sindall was appointed to build both Hillingdon鈥檚 拢7m Glebe primary school and the 拢13m GlaxoSmithKlein sustainable chemistry building at the University of Nottingham, both of which are aiming to achieve the highest BREEAM rating possible.

Other strong performers were Laing O鈥橰ourke, which won eight green projects with a total project value of 拢445m; Willmott Dixon, which won 19 green projects with a total project value of 拢278m; and Wates, which won 10 green projects with a total project value of 拢323m.
