Central waste management system will co-ordinate reuse across the site
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has set a target of recycling or reusing 90% of waste from the main construction phase on the 2012 site.
To help meet the target, the ODA is putting in place a central waste management service across London's Olympic park.
Waste created during construction of the venues and infrastructure will be taken for sorting to a single dedicated area, to reduce the amount of extra traffic.
Materials that cannot be reused on site will be transported away by sustainable transport such as river barge.
Dan Epstein, head of sustainable development and regeneration at the ODA, said: 鈥淲e have exceeded our target for reclaiming materials from the demolition and clearing of the site, much of which has been used to create the correct land levels and roads within the park.鈥
To monitor progress against the sustainability targets it has set itself, the ODA has developed a new environmental management system.
This has been externally audited and certified as being of an international standard - which the ODA says is a first for a major project of this size in the UK.
