Firm is main contractor on 拢350m Birmingham scheme
Proposals for the athletes village that will be built by Lendlease for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham have been recommended for approval.
City planners will decide later today on the scheme that will be used by competitors in the games and which will later be turned into a mixed-use scheme featuring more than 1,100 homes.
The development, which is located on the site of the former Birmingham City University in Perry Barr, will accommodate around 6,500 athletes and officials during the games.
After they have finished, the scheme, which has been designed by a team led by local firms Glancy Nicholls Architects and Glenn Howells Architects, will include 1,146 homes as well as 268 extra care apartments, more than 1,200 sq m of commercial space along with a community centre.
The site has been divided into 11 blocks ranging from two to 15 storeys.
The council case officer dealing with the scheme told planners: 鈥淢ost importantly, post games the proposal would result in a significant legacy development which would provide much needed well-designed new homes鈥 welcome the proposal and consider it should be approved.鈥
Last month, the city council announced Lendlease, which was the development and construction management partner for the London 2012 Olympic Village, had landed the 拢350m principal contractor role on the village.
Demolition of the former BCU buildings started in June, with local firm DSM Demolition due to complete the preparation works for the Commonwealth Games Village shortly.
