A new planning application which will see a waterfront neighbourhood scheme on the site of the former Westferry Printworks double in size has been lodged with the local council.

Media magnate Richard Desmond’s company Northern & Shell owns the 15-acre Isle of Dogs site.

A design team led by PLP Architecture, who also designed the original version of the scheme, has submitted a new set of plans to Tower Hamlets council on behalf of Westferry Development and Mace Developments, which is acting as development partner.

The project now aims to deliver 1,500 homes, 35% of which are affordable, up from 700 in the previous version of the scheme.

It is also set to include sporting facilities, a new community hub and creche, as well as a health centre. A new 1,200-space secondary school is also planned.

Last year, WSP landed a role providing structural and geotechnical engineering for Desmond’s redevelopment of Westferry Printworks.

The landscaping on the project, which will be carried out by LDA Design, includes includes two new parks, waterside and woodland walks, play areas, and a space for local food growing. 

The London Plan has highlighted the Isle of Dogs as an area in need of new homes and investment.
