East London scheme will open in 2022
Bouygues UK has been named preferred contractor to build a new 拢105m civic centre in Whitechapel for Tower Hamlets council.
The scheme includes building a new town hall on the site of the former Royal London Hospital building on Whitechapel Road, which was bought by the council after being vacated by Barts Health NHS Trust in 2012.
The new town hall will be created through part new build and a refurbishment of the grade II listed building to provide 26,700m2 of space.
The ground floor will be given over to public use allowing access to all the council鈥檚 services in one place, as well as housing meeting rooms, a caf茅 and the council chamber.
Construction is due to begin later this year with completion date expected in autumn 2021. The new centre will then open in 2022.
It is part of the council鈥檚 Whitechapel Vision Masterplan, which also includes a new 拢300m life sciences campus being created by the Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London.
The council hopes to recoup 拢78m of the cost of the new building through the sale of old council buildings that will no longer be needed once staff have moved
