Proposals for a high-speed network could mean the city gains two more train stations
Birmingham could get two new stations under proposals for a high-speed rail network, according to reports.
The HS2 company, set up by the Department for Transport under Sir David Rowlands, is currently considering the route, funding and other plans for the service set to connect Scotland to London. It will report to government by the end of the year.
The company is expected to recommend a line into Birmingham, which would need two new stations, one in the city centre, possibly in the Eastside district.
The second would be built close to Birmingham International Airport and the NEC, close to the M42 motorway.
Policymakers say that New Street Station, refurbishment of which will start in the New Year, will not be appropriate for the job.
The report is likely to put forward several potential routes, although a line through the Chiltern Hills terminating at Euston seem to be favourite.
A high-speed rail network has cross-party support.
