Airside building at the South East England airport is to double in size

Bechtel has won the job to deliver Gatwick鈥檚 拢180m expansion of one of the airport鈥檚 airside buildings in the North Terminal, Pier 6.

The project includes moving the stand at Pier 6 for the world鈥檚 largest aircraft, the A380, to a new stand at Pier 5 and the widening and realignment of a taxiway to enable the A380 to move between the runway and its new stand.

US-based Bechtel will start on site next year in a construction management role, with work expected to completed in early 2022.

The scheme is part of a 拢2.7bn investment programme by Gatwick鈥檚 investment fund owners, who include Global Infrastructure Partners.

Raymond Melee, Gatwick鈥檚 construction director, said the project was one of the most important programmes of work in the airport鈥檚 current capital investment scheme.

Bechtel鈥檚 UK managing director, Paul Gibbs, said construction work would be sequenced with the airport鈥檚 timetable in order to minimise disruption to passengers.
