Environment Agency gives EDF provisional approval for Hinkley Point nuclear project
EDF Energy鈥檚 new nuclear power plant at Hinkley Point moved one step closer to construction today after the Environment Agency gave provisional approval to key elements of EDF鈥檚 plans.
The Environment Agency published draft decisions to grant the energy firm permission to dispose of radioactive waste, discharge non-radioactive waste into the Channel and operate large diesel standby generators at the site.
Chris Bakken, project director for Hinkley Point C, said: 鈥淭he Environment Agency鈥檚 positive assessment of our applications is very encouraging. It marks a further important milestone on the journey to delivering new, safe and clean low carbon energy for the nation.鈥
The Environement Agency will now consult on its draft decisions until 9 November 2012.
The Planning Inspectorate is currently deciding whether to grant planning permission for the development and is expected to come to a decision towards the end of this year.
