How it was judged – and who made the shortlist

Finding the best of the best

For the first time this year, the HSE’s Working Well Together Awards merged with ɫTV’s Health and Safety Awards to create the definitive awards ceremony to celebrate excellence in this crucial arena. In doing so, they also created the top prize for health and safety within the construction industry – the Working Well Together Health and Safety Organisation of the Year.

All of the shortlisted candidates were eligible for this “best of the best” prize, so the judges had a tough job when faced with all the remarkable firms whose achievements are outlined in the previous pages. And it was not just about who had walked away with the most trophies on the night, who had impressed the panel with the most spectacular entry, or who had been shortlisted again and again.

No, the winner of this award had to be the organisation that most embodied the principles of the Working Well Together campaign – particularly those of the four Cs: commitment, competence, communication and co-operation – whether or not it had won in any of the previous categories.

The final shortlist

BAA Winner of the Best Occupational Health Initiative, Client with Best Commitment to Health and Safety, Working Well Together No 1 Worker and Best Site Facilities categories

Bovis Lend Lease Shortlisted for the Best Occupational Health Initiative, Best Site Facilities and Integrated Project Safety awards

Skanska UK Winner of the Best ɫTV Contractor’s Safety Initiative and shortlisted for the Best Site Facilities prize

Taylor Woodrow Shortlisted for Best Housebuilder’s Safety Initiative and Best Occupational Health Initiative

So who walked away with our ultimate accolade?

‘The winner of this award had to be the organisation that most embodied the principles of Working Well Together’

Winner

BAA

With its groundbreaking initiatives and second-to-none site facilities at the UK’s biggest construction project, BAA was found to be the organisation that best represented what Working Well Together is really about – ticking those four Cs boxes again and again. Some of the highlights of this client’s achievements include: the T5 agreement, a non-adversarial contract that fosters partnering and supply-chain collaboration – demonstrating WWT’s requisite co-operation; the “Safer by Design” initiative, which designs in health and safety from the start of the project – showing and indeed engendering competence; the “Respect for People” philosophy, which translates on the ground into the now award-winning welfare and occupational health facilities; an excellent communications programme that includes daily briefings, safety handbooks, posters, site newspaper and safety hotline; and strong leadership with tangible commitment to the welfare of its workforce. Here’s another C for you – congratulations, BAA.
