Why did you choose construction as a career?

It chose me. It was the second seat in my training contract and I realised that it had all the best bits of law while making a tangible contribution to our built environment. I stayed in the department until I qualified and the rest, as they say, is history.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

Being appointed as general counsel to Morgan Sindall Group plc in 2014.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career to date?

Making sure that others feel better as a result of my presence, and that my impact lasts in my absence.

If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

That the perception of the “sucking air through teeth” builder be replaced with an understanding of just what a team of consummate professionals it takes to successfully complete a project.

What is the most helpful advice that you have been given?

Be yourself, tell the truth.

In all honesty I am not a fan of the BT Tower, which is a shame because I can see it clearly from my desk and look at it every day…

What one piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in your profession?

Never underestimate the willingness of another human being to help you if you ask.

The varied nature of the role is what makes it challenging and rewarding in equal measure. There is nowhere I would rather work or a group of people I would rather work with.

Do you have a life philosophy?

People will forget what you said and they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel.

What do you think your best quality is?

Empathy.

What trait do you most dislike in yourself?

Overthinking.
