It is estimated the system will cut the library鈥檚 electricity bills by 40% and save about one tonne of CO2 a year. A display panel situatedn the main library foyer is tracks how much energy the panels are generating.

12 solar panels were installed by SIG鈥檚 delivery partners, EvoEnergy, and are mounted on a flat roof using an A Frame. The 2kW (kilowatt) system is capable of delivering approximately 1700 kWh (kilowatt-hour) of electricity per annum.

The system forms part of the 拢1m Meadows Alive refurbishment project financed by the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).

Paul Roche, director, SIG Sustainable Solutions, said: 鈥淭he system has a minimum life span of 25 years offering the library prolonged cost savings while reducing its impact on the environment. With the government due to introduce the 鈥榝eed-in tariff鈥� in April next year this PV system will actually provide the library with a source of income as it will get paid for the energy it creates.鈥�
