Passivent has launched the iHybrid domestic ventilation system, which it claims uses 55% less electrical energy than a conventional mechanical system

The system combines the benefits of natural 鈥渋ntelligent鈥 passive ventilation with those of heat recovery in a 鈥渕ixed mode鈥 hybrid solution.

Passivent iHybrid predominantly uses natural 鈥減assive stack鈥 ventilation, harnessing natural air movement principles to draw fresh air in and exhaust stale air without electrical consumption, with 鈥渁s and when necessary鈥 heat recovery.

A thermostat monitors the outside temperature: when above 9掳C, the natural ventilation wall vent remains open, with ceiling-mounted extracts drawing the internal air out. When the external temperature falls below 9掳C, the system closes the wall vent and switches air transfer via the heat exchanger, transmitting warmth from the exhaust air to the incoming air.
