Dim the lights

Phasing out of incandescent and halogen light bulbs has begun under EU regulations that came into effect last month. Retailers have until 2012 to sell their stock. Coloured lamps are not affected.

Power boost

Energy secretary Ed Miliband is proposing to revamp the way power plants get connected to the UK grid. The shake-up, part of the government’s Low Carbon Transition Plan, is aimed at getting new projects on the grid more quickly. The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) says about 200 projects are waiting to be connected, with a potential generation capacity of over 60GW, of which 17GW is from renewable sources. Consultation on how the system will work closes on 17 November.

New adviser role

The government is to appoint a chief adviser on construction to chair the board for government procurement and help promote innovation and sustainability. Rudi Klein, chief executive of the Specialist Engineering Contractors’ Group, and Vaughan Burnand, chairman of Constructing Excellence, are possible contenders.
