鈥淒o you watch Little Britain?鈥 Adrian demands as I sit down. 鈥淲ho does he look like? Go on, guess!鈥
He waggles a finger in the general direction of his boss, Andy Black, who rolls his eyes as the group giggle.
鈥淵ou know the scene with the prime minister, and his 眉ber camp assistant?鈥 The others smirk. 鈥淗e looks more like his other twin though,鈥 Steph giggles. Who? 鈥淗ave you ever seen Ready Steady Cook?鈥 Er, no I confess. 鈥淎insley Harriott?鈥 she suggests. Andy grins. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the smile,鈥 she continues. The others nod sagely. As implausible as their chosen lookalikes are, they鈥檝e clearly had this conversation before. In depth.
The boss shrugs and takes a sip of his drink 鈥 champagne bought specially to celebrate Steph鈥檚 good news. 鈥淚鈥檝e been made a British citizen鈥 she shrieks excitedly in a Canadian accent.
鈥淎bout time you started living here legally,鈥 sniggers Paul.
Steph ignores him and continues: 鈥淚鈥檝e been chosen by Boris Johnson specially.鈥 Sorry, what? Since when has the Blonde One had the power to decide who should be British?
鈥淪he wasn鈥檛 exactly chosen,鈥 Jamie explains. 鈥淭hey rung her up this morning to say she had been randomly selected to have the London mayor present her with her citizenship at City Hall.鈥
Steph, unfazed by the truth, is rehearsing God Save The Queen in the mistaken belief that she will be required to do a solo for Boris. 鈥淚鈥檝e been practicing today,鈥 she announces proudly.
鈥淚 know,鈥 says Paul. 鈥淲e could hear you in the boardroom.鈥
Steph cringes. 鈥淚 went through this phase where I would get really drunk, and just start singing your national anthem,鈥 she continues.
In fact, it seems Steph has a penchant for all things British. She excitedly tells the rest of the team about the time that the Queen tried to run her over. 鈥淚 was running in Windsor and I had to jump on the grassy verge,鈥 she says. 鈥淨ueen Liz came right up close in the Jag she was driving, and gave me a wink.鈥 Jamie and Paul splutter into their pints.
鈥淎re you sure she didn鈥檛 have something in her eye?鈥 I tentatively suggest. 鈥淲ell she might not have actually been winking at me,鈥 Steph admits, grudgingly. 鈥淏ut she may as well have been,鈥 she adds, beaming. I鈥檓 not quite sure Boris knows what he鈥檚 let himself in for.
Conversation returns back to lookalikes and Ainsley Harriott, until Adrian suddenly recalls tomorrow is pay review day. 鈥淧lease forget all we鈥檝e said tonight Andy,鈥 he begs his boss.
Andy turns to me. 鈥淗ave you seen the X Factor?鈥 he asks, nodding in the direction of the other Paul who has a shock of blonde hair to rival Boris. 鈥淒o you remember a guy called Rhydian 鈥︹
