London 2012 has unveiled a sustainability framework to encompass all aspects of the construction, staging and legacy of the upcoming Olympic Games.
Towards A One Planet 2012 identifies five priority themes 鈥 climate change, waste, biodiversity, inclusion and healthy living 鈥 and highlights ways of minimising the impact of the Games, while promoting diversity and creating new lasting employment opportunities.
Highlights of the plan include a carbon foot-printing study to measure the climate change impact of the Games and prioritise areas for reducing emissions including: venue construction; creating a sustainability code for suppliers; setting standards for accessibility; and ensuring locals benefit from training and employment created by the Games.
The BSI is also creating a new sustainable event standard 鈥 BS 8901: Specification for a sustainable event management system with guidance for use.
Olympics minister, Tessa Jowell, said: 鈥淭owards A One Planet 2012 is unique in its scope; covering not just the environmental impact of the Games but also the impact on areas like transport, biodiversity, employment and business legacies.鈥
